Why potty training matters at this stage
House training is a schedule problem wearing a shopping problem's clothes. A young puppy's bladder simply does not hold much, and control arrives over months, not weeks — which is why the two things that matter most are frequency of trips outside and how completely you clean up the misses.
The cleaning part is the one people get wrong. A normal household cleaner removes the stain and leaves the scent markers that tell a dog this is the toilet. An enzymatic cleaner breaks those compounds down instead, which is why every product in this section is either absorbent or enzymatic. Soak the spot properly, let it dwell, and let it dry — a wipe is not a clean.
Pads are a genuine fork in the road, not a default. They are the right answer for apartment dogs with a long trip to grass, for a puppy who is not fully vaccinated, and for medical situations. They are the wrong answer if your goal is straightforwardly outdoor training, because you are teaching the dog that indoors is sometimes acceptable and then reversing it later.
This category comes back at the other end of life. If a house-trained older dog starts having accidents, that is a vet visit, not a training problem.

Only an enzyme cleaner breaks down the compounds that tell a dog to go in the same spot again. Masking the smell for your nose does nothing for theirs.
Enough volume to soak, not wipe
Urine travels into carpet backing and subfloor. A gallon jug that lets you saturate a spot properly beats a 32-ounce spray you ration.
Decide about pads on purpose
Pads are right for apartments, unvaccinated puppies and medical needs — and they add a step you later have to undo if your goal is simply outdoors.
Pad size and a border
Puppies miss. A 22-inch pad with a plastic border on all four sides catches the overshoot that a small pad turns into a floor problem.
Safe around the dog when dry
Look for products whose own labels address pet safety, and rinse or air anything you use on a surface your dog sleeps on.

- Most puppies are largely reliable somewhere between four and six months, with stragglers well past that, and small breeds often take longer. Progress is not linear — a week of clean floors followed by three accidents is normal, not a regression you caused.
- Do pee pads slow down house training?
- They can, if your end goal is purely outdoors, because you are teaching an indoor option first and then removing it. They are still the right call for high-rise apartments, for puppies not yet cleared to walk on public grass, and for illness or recovery. Choose deliberately rather than by default.
- Why is my old dog suddenly having accidents?
- Treat it as medical until a vet says otherwise. Urinary tract infections, kidney disease, hormone-responsive incontinence, arthritis that makes standing up hard, and canine cognitive dysfunction all show up this way. Ask your vet directly: "could this be medical rather than behavioural, and what should we rule out first?"
- How often should I take my puppy out when potty training?
- Often: Humane World for Animals says at least every two hours, plus right after waking, playing, eating and drinking. A rough guide is that a puppy can hold their bladder about one hour per month of age, so a three-month-old may need to go every three hours. VCA adds a trip every half hour during high-energy play, and overnight outings may be needed until about five months.
- What not to do when potty training a puppy?
- Do not punish accidents. VCA warns never to rub a dog's nose in a mess or strike a puppy, because punishing a natural act can teach them never to toilet in front of a person, which makes outdoor training harder. Also avoid sending the puppy outside alone, starting play before they have gone, and cleaning with ordinary products: an enzymatic cleaner removes the odor that cues a repeat.
- How do I potty train a puppy at night?
- Plan for at least one night trip rather than hoping they sleep through.
