Small paws. A whole new world.
Settle in, build gentle routines, and take the first days one step at a time.
Help first. Gear when it helps.
WagYears is a free, stage-of-life guide to dogs, published by Hilly Shore Labs: it organises dog ownership into six life stages — before you get a dog, new puppy, puppy, adolescent, adult and senior — and covers the same six needs at every one of them: nourish, rest, move, think, train and protect.

Six needs. Same map, every stage.
Whatever the age, a dog's needs sort into six boxes. Here is every shelf we compare — 24 of them — under the need it answers, each showing the pick that currently leads it.

Everyday gear, chosen for your dog
Start with the job you need to solve. A slow feeder, harness or chew will not suit every dog; comfort, health and supervision come first. Each card names the stages the product actually serves, and how we rank explains what sits behind it. We research gear; we do not test it. Some links below are Amazon affiliate links: if you buy, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it does not change what we pick — see the full disclosure.
A slow-feeder bowl is an option for dogs who gulp meals. Choose a shape your dog can use comfortably; meal times vary.
Choose a harness using the maker’s size chart, then check comfort and movement. A harness supports walks; it does not teach loose-leash skills.
And the things you buy again
Four categories you may buy again, depending on your dog’s needs. Prices last checked October 8, 2026, and they move — the listing is always the authority.
Training treats
Small, soft and fast to eat — the reward rate is what teaches, not the size.
Dental chews
WHIMZEES Brushzees Dental Chews
A dental chew can supplement a dental-care routine. Check the exact product’s size and age instructions, and ask your vet about brushing.
Flea and tick control
Ask your vet which parasite prevention suits your dog. Follow that product’s label for age, current weight and application interval.
Joint support
Joint supplements are optional, not an automatic need of ageing. Discuss evidence, medicines and possible interactions with your vet first.
Picks side by side, feature by feature.
Every shelf lines its picks up in one matrix — price, the specs that matter, and who each one is actually for. Compare equivalent products first; a lower price alone does not decide the right fit.
