VOHC-Approved Dog Dental Products: What to Use at Each Age

Most owners meet the VOHC seal on a bag of chews and read it as "this cleans teeth." The seal means something narrower than that, the list behind it is short, and the product that matters most at every age is not a chew at all. This guide reads the list against the four products on our dental care shelf, then walks the routine from puppy to senior, starting with the adult stage most owners are in.

What the VOHC seal does and does not tell you

The Veterinary Oral Health Council is nine veterinary dentists and dental scientists. Its seal says a product reduces plaque, tartar or both when used as directed, and it is voluntary: a product without it has not failed, it has not applied. AAHA's 2019 dental guidelines put it plainly: many products claim a dental effect, and only those the VOHC has accepted have met preset standards.

Two details change how you shop:

• The claim column. VOHC accepts a product for plaque, for tartar, or for both. AAHA's guidelines add that brushing removes plaque, not tartar, and that tartar already on the teeth is a job for the vet.
• The seal belongs to a product, not a brand. The November 2025 dog list names individual shapes and formulas, so one bag in a range can carry it while the next does not.

Here is how our shelf reads against that list:

Rule of thumb: Read the claim, not just the seal. Plaque, tartar or both is printed on the list for a reason.

Puppy: teach the mouth before there is much to clean

The puppy stage is about handling, not cleaning. AAHA tells vets to warn owners of any puppy who will be smaller than 20 to 25 pounds as an adult that its dental care is likely to be more involved than a larger dog's, and flat-faced breeds tend to have more trouble because their teeth are rotated and crowded. If that is your puppy, the habit matters more, not less.

1. Lift a lip, touch one tooth, reward. Stop there for a few days.
2. Run a finger with a little gel along the outside of the gumline.
3. Swap the bare finger for a rubber fingerbrush.
4. Move to a real brush once the fingerbrush is boring.

VCA's puppy dental page gives the chewing rule veterinary dentists use: do not let a dog chew anything that won't bend, because hard objects break baby and adult teeth alike. AAHA's guidelines see no strong rationale for antlers or bones either. So the chew for this stage is rubber, such as the KONG Goodie Bone, stuffed and frozen, which keeps a puppy chewing without cracking anything.

Week one is just this: lift the lip, touch a tooth, reward, and stop while the puppy is still relaxed.

Two age limits come from the makers themselves. Wellness says its VOHC-listed Brushzees are for dogs older than nine months, and TropiClean's listing gives twelve weeks as the minimum for its additive. AAHA recommends a first dental cleaning with X-rays under anaesthesia by one year of age for small and medium dogs and by two for larger breeds, even when nothing looks wrong.

Adolescent and adult: the routine that actually holds

AAHA's guidelines are blunt: brushing needs to be done daily to be of benefit. Twice a week feels diligent; it is not the routine the guidelines describe.

What works:

• Brushing once a day, even briefly, at the same point in the evening routine
• One right-sized dental chew a day, counted against the dog's food
• The water additive at the dose on the bottle, if brushing is patchy
• A vet look at the mouth at every visit, and a cleaning under anaesthesia when advised

What people try that doesn't:

• Brushing when you remember
• A marrow bone or antler "to clean the teeth"
• Anaesthesia-free scaling, which AAHA calls unacceptable because it cleans only the visible surface and gives a false sense of benefit
• A chew the dog swallows in two bites

Why the Virbac kit is the pick

The Virbac C.E.T. kit wins because it matches the staged start above: Virbac pairs a fingerbrush and a dual-ended toothbrush with its poultry-flavoured enzymatic paste, which uses glucose oxidase and lactoperoxidase. The paste is not on the VOHC list, and that is fine. VOHC names brushing the gold standard, and it is the brush against the gumline that does the work; the paste's job is to make a dog want the brush in its mouth.

Where chews and the additive fit

A daily chew is a daily treat, so the calories come out of dinner. The additive asks nothing of the dog, which makes it the fallback for the stretch when brushing lapses, not a reason to stop.

The WHIMZEES seal question

The WHIMZEES we list is the value pack of mixed shapes, and the listing shows the VOHC seal. The VOHC list, though, names two WHIMZEES products: Brushzees and the Toothbrush shape. If the seal is the reason you are buying, buy those shapes by name. Wellness's own directions are one chew a day, with water available, for dogs older than nine months, and VOHC's list reminds owners to feed the right size for the dog's weight. Supervise, and stop if the dog tries to swallow one whole.

Remember: The seal sits on a named product. Check the shape and the size, not just the brand on the bag.

Senior: when brushing starts to hurt

The senior stage changes the problem. AAHA warns that brushing teeth with already inflamed gums causes pain and makes the dog averse to it. An old dog who accepted the brush for years and now pulls away may have a sore mouth, and pushing on teaches him to hate the brush. Book the vet first.

Owners often delay a cleaning for fear of anaesthesia. AAHA's position is that a medically needed procedure should not be refused on age alone; an older dog is assessed individually and anaesthetised with extra care. For home care after a painful mouth has been treated, go gentle: gel on a finger, then the fingerbrush, and the additive, which asks nothing of the mouth. Watch chews closely in a dog with missing teeth, who may swallow pieces he can no longer break down.

The water additive, read closely

TropiClean's directions are one capful in three cups of fresh water daily. Its listing says the VOHC seal is for plaque control in dogs at the full recommended dose, and VOHC's own list agrees on plaque. That is two useful facts: tartar already on the teeth will not dissolve, and a watered-down dose is not the dose that earned the seal. Owner reviews split on water tolerance, and a dog who drinks less because of an additive is worse off. Watch the bowl for the first week, and stop if intake drops.

In short: The additive is plaque control at full dose, not a descaler. Tartar is a vet job.
