Suits these stages
Is the Instinct Raw Boost Mixers, Beef right for your dog?
- Who it’s for
- An older dog who still eats their usual food but needs a reason to start, with a spoonful of freeze-dried beef crumbled over the bowl.
- Who should skip it
- Your dog is on a therapeutic diet, or anyone in the house is immunocompromised. This is freeze-dried raw meat, and the label says it is not a complete diet.
The verdict
The most honestly labelled topper we have found, which is why it is here. Instinct's own feeding panel says the product is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only, and tells you to cut the calories of your dog's current food to make room for it. That is exactly the job on this shelf: making a complete diet smell worth eating to an older dog whose nose has dulled. The recipe leads with beef, beef liver and beef kidney, and Instinct describes the pieces as soft and easy to chew, which matters for a worn mouth. The label's chart puts a dog up to 20 pounds at about a quarter cup a day. It is freeze-dried raw, and WSAVA's raw-diet toolkit is clear that freeze-drying does not kill all bacteria, so handle it like raw beef. Tell your vet what you are adding.
Drawbacks
- Raw meat: wash hands and bowls as you would for raw beef
- Expensive per ounce, even used by the spoonful
