Suits these stages
Is the Hill's Science Diet Adult 7+ Wet, Beef & Vegetables right for your dog?
- Who it’s for
- A senior whose vet is happy with a complete adult food, served as a soft canned meal for a sore mouth or a spoonful over kibble.
- Who should skip it
- Your vet is managing a kidney, heart or other condition with diet. That is a prescription food conversation, not this one.
The verdict
The one complete food on this shelf, and its label is what earns the place. Hill's states that animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that it provides complete and balanced nutrition for maintenance of adult dogs. That is the right standard to look for, because AAFCO has no senior profile: the 7+ on the can describes the dog Hill's made it for, not a separate nutritional category. It is chunks in gravy, starting with water, beef and pork liver, and Hill's publishes the calories, 314 per can, which makes portions easy to work out with your vet. Soft, wet food is the practical answer for an older dog with sore teeth or a fading appetite. Hill's says it is not for puppies or pregnant or nursing dogs, and suggests switching gradually over about a week.
Drawbacks
- Costs far more per calorie than kibble
- Not grain-free: wheat flour and corn starch are on the label
